"Understanding the Link Between Substance Addiction and Mesothelioma: What You Need to Know"

Mesothelioma awareness...

Mesothelioma is a type of rare cancer that grows in the thin lining that surrounds most of our internal organs called the mesothelium. I myself have not known anyone with this form of cancer, but I am well aware of the drastic changes it has to not only the quality of life, but also to the time you have due to its aggressive nature.  For more information, on mesothelioma please visit the following link:

Hope is a tool I have seen assist many people with chronic and often fatal conditions so keep that in mind. A positive mind can help heal the body or at least improve a patient's quality of life for more joyful days.  For information on the life expectancy statistics please visit this video link:

ADDICTION BEFORE OR AFTER DIAGNOSIS?

Dealing with substance use disorder/addiction on top of a pre-existing physical health condition is a challenge. There are patients that become addicts after treatments for pain which makes the effectiveness of mesothelioma treatment significantly complicated. Sometimes asking the question, “how the hell do I get through this?” Addiction in itself is an illness and like any other health condition it is not something that is intentionally sought after.

I myself have endometriosis which is a chronic condition that can cause severe pain. In my case, it is every day and sometimes weeks with no end in sight. Using painkillers is my new normal and while I use alternative pain relief methods the pain is still unbearable without medicinal substance intervention. I have no other way to cope at the office or even move around without them. So, I have some understanding of how patients with chronic pain can easily become dependent which may lead to addiction.

WHAT CAUSES MESOTHELIOMA?

The silent killer

Mesothelioma is commonly caused by exposure to asbestos which refers to a set of six types of silicate mineral which is naturally occurring. It is used in a wide range of applications and caution must be taken. Here are some common uses of asbestos:

  • Insulation

  • Brakes

  • Shingles

  • Flooring

Mostly men who work in construction sites and are in contact with asbestos products are known to later develop mesothelioma over +/- 20-60 years. Symptoms of this condition depend on where the mesothelium cancer cells are located.

The Lanier Law firm based in the US is dedicated to promoting awareness of mesothelioma and providing you with necessary legal counsel and representation. Your employer is responsible for protecting you from asbestos exposure in the workplace. If you were exposed at work and develop the medical condition you are eligible to file a claim.
